Murupara is the 'gateway' to the Urewera National Park and the rivers in this catchment are magnificent. They include the headwaters of the Whakatane River.

This river is accessible by helicopter and horseback. It is a river of unparalled beauty running through native forest.With clear open banks and a stony bed, the river is fordable every two to three hundred yards.

It has pools, runs, small rapids and best of all...no other fisherman. These wild resident trout are real fighters.

A local guide will meet you at the river with horses. The horses are 'bomb-proof' bush horses and will give you an armchair ride. Plus, it's a great vantage point for spotting trout! We recommend at least one day on this river during your stay.
