Gear for the Murupara Area
Page 1- Murupara River/Lake Fishing
Page 2 - Urewera Wilderness Fishing
Rods
7/8 weight, 8'6" to 9'
Lines
(Rivers) Double taper or weight forward floating
(Lakes) Slow sinking
Dull coloured - bright line, while easy to see, tends to spook these
fish.
Leaders
9'-12' tapered for dry fly
14' for nymphing, usually double nymph setup
3X - 5X tippets
Reel
Should have a capacity for 75yds of backing...these fish really
fight!
Flies
Bring any of your favourite flies. Your guides will advise you and
if you don't have something suitable, will supply the best flies
for the hatch, time of day, season and conditions.
Waders
Light weight waders are suitable for the summer months. From early
winter on you should use 3mm neoprene waders. Felt-soled wading
boots are generally used because of the stony bed of the rivers.
Glasses
Don't forget your polaroids! VERY IMPORTANT!
You will be sight fishing alot...the ultimate challenge in fly fishing.
The rivers are usually gin clear (unless it's rainy) and the guides
try to show you the quarry prior to the cast. After a day of stalking
here, you can consider yourself well versed in trout spotting.
Seasons
The Rangitaiki and it's tributaries are open all year including
Flaxy Lake, Lake Aniwhenua and the Wheao Canal.
The Whirinaki and it's tributaries, the Whakatane and all other
streams in this area close for spawning from 1st July until 30th
September. (Please check with us regarding any changes to fishing
regulations year to year.)
